Announcements and Information Items VI. Adjournment Memorandum Vice President Office of Academic Affairs TO: Faculty Senate FROM: Academic Affairs RE: General Education Goals DATE: October 25, 2006 In fall, 2005, the University Assessment Committee and the Office of Academic Affairs requested that the Curriculum Committee review the universitys general education goals. As the goals had not been evaluated in the past ten years, the request involved reviewing the current goals, revising as necessary, and developing a mechanism for a regular review process. There are ten general education goals stipulated in the current Arkansas Tech catalogue, encompassing over thirty associated sub-goals, which is far greater than the typical four to five general education goals pursued by other universities. Since 2000 great strides have been made in program assessment. As progress continues to be made there, the focus now shifts to general education since no systematic effort has been made to assess this aspect of student learning. In preparation for doing so, the Curriculum Committee has recommended a reduction of the general education objectives to a manageable number. Academic Affairs asks that these recommendations now be reviewed by the Faculty Senate and the Assessment Committee simultaneously for feedback and input. It must be stressed that no effort has been made to change the general education curriculum. General Education Goals Proposed and Approved by the University Curriculum Committee, 20 October 2006 The graduating ATU student should have acquired a foundation for knowledge common to educated people and the capacity to expand that knowledge over their lifetime. In order to fulfill this, the student will: Effectively use communication skills to understand, analyze, inform, and persuade. Understand ethical and moral issues of diverse societies and environments. Think critically, synthesizing knowledge and drawing conclusions from complex material. Gain knowledge of the natural, physical, and technological world and the qualitative and quantitative methods and analysis used to obtain that knowledge. Understand the role of humanistic and artistic expression in ancient and contemporary cultures.
