The Syllabus Statements 

Students with disabilities glean a significant amount of information about a course and their instructor from the access statement. A well designed statement indicates the faculty member鈥檚 level of commitment to designing their course in a way that welcomes all students, including those with a disability, and provides guidance to those students who experience barriers.

As a minimum, the statement should include contact information for the ATU-Ozark Disability Services Office and be placed prominently (preferably within the first page) of the syllabus.

Disability Services Recommended Syllabus Statement

米乐M6-Ozark Campus values diversity and inclusion and is committed to a climate of mutual respect and full participation of all students. My goal is to create a learning environment that is useable, equitable, inclusive and welcoming. If there are aspects of the instruction or design of this course that result in barriers to your inclusion or prevent an accurate assessment of your achievement, please meet with me privately to discuss your needs and concerns. You may also contact the Student Success & Disability Services Coordinator, located in Technology & Academic Support, Suite 140, in person, via phone at (479) 968-0337, via email at ozark.accommodations@atu.edu, or visit their website at /ozark/ssc/ in order to initiate a request for accommodations.

Additional Recommendations

• Use person first language. Terms such as handicapped, special needs, and disabled should not be used as many individuals find them offensive. Examples of person first language may be found at .
  
  
• Avoid wording that communicates the primary reason for providing access is a compliance issue.
  
  
• Avoid wording that places all of the responsibility for access on the student. Equitable access is a shared responsibility between faculty, staff, the student, and the Office of Disability Services.
  
  
• Do not place time restrictions on the student鈥檚 right to request accommodations. While it鈥檚 preferable for a student to identify their need early in the semester, they have the right to seek accommodations at any point during the academic term if they experience barriers in the course due to their disability.

uPDATED fLEXIBILITY PROCESS 

There have been recent changes to the processing of flexibility agreements for our student. Starting Spring 2020, the wording within the Faculty Notification Letter has been updated to the following:

Attendance Flexiblity Agreement

It has determined that this student has been approved for additional excused absences due to a chronic medical condition(s) which may flare without warning. The total number of absences without penalty is not to exceed double the class attendance policy. It is appropriate to provide an alternative method of earning participation points missed due to these absences. The student is responsible for arranging to make up any graded work missed during an excused absence and submit it within 4 (four) days of the original due date. Work submitted within this timeframe will not be subject to a late penalty.

Deadline Flexability Agreement

The student may have difficulty keeping pace with coursework due to a chronic medical condition(s) which may flare without warning OR a condition that results in a slower working pace. The instructor will allow flexibility with due dates upon request from the student before the deadline. The student must submit assignments within 4 (four) days of the original due date.

If this course is lab or activity based, or if the agreement above compromises the integrity of the course, the instructor should contact Disability Services as soon as possible to execute an alternative agreement in lieu of the statement above

If these statements above do not compromise the format of your course, please use the agreement for the duration of the term. If it does compromise your course, contact the ATU-Ozark Disability Services Office at (479) 508-3368 to either utilize an existing agreement from a previous term or set up an appointment to create a new agreement for this term.
